"I think that the shantu of the Hausa harim are among the most fascinating and graceful of the Nigerian instruments. They are simply elongated gourds with a hole in each end, and beautifully decorate with hot poker designs. They are used exclusively by the women in the harim and are played by stamping one end sharply against the bare flesh inside the knee with the left hand, while the right hand cups the hole of the other end" - James Blades.
